Nobel Laureate John Martinis Visits FUNQS

The FUNQS lab recently welcomed Prof. John Martinis, recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics, for a visit that combined scientific exchange with a look back at the roots of superconducting quantum computing.

During his time at the lab, Martinis engaged in an extended discussion on the current challenges facing quantum computing and the opportunities on the horizon. Every member of the group had the chance to exchange ideas directly with one of the field’s founding figures.

The visit also had a personal dimension: members of the lab gathered stories from Martinis about Prof. Barends’ postdoctoral years under his supervision.

Martinis’ visit culminated in a talk at PGI-Day at Forschungszentrum Jülich, where he presented the work that led to his Nobel Prize. He closed with words of encouragement for the next generation of quantum researchers.
